How can I volunteer at the mediation center?
Anyone is welcome to volunteer to help in the office, in the area of
outreach and public education or with donations both monetary and in-
kind.
Selected community members may be trained as community
mediators. MSCMC is committed to training mediators that reflect the
diversity of the community with respect to age, race, gender, ethnicity,
income and education.
A successful candidate must complete the following requirements:
- Community Mediation Maryland 45-hour basic mediation training
(no charge, usually scheduled within 6 months of application)
- Observe 2 complete mediations
- Mediate 2 complete mediations as a mediator trainee working with
a lead mediator
- Complete a 5 hour Community Mediation Maryland follow-up
training
- Participate in a 2-hour Strategic Feedback Session with co-
mediators and center staff
If you think you might be interested in mediation training please
consider the following:
- If you are looking to give back to, or improve the quality of life in
your community, you are probably on the right track. Others need
not apply
- You cannot miss one hour of the 45 hour basic training and still
be eligible for certification. This is a serious commitment of time.
For Mid Shore Community Mediation Center MSCMC it is a
serious commitment of resources as well.
- The training contract you will sign before training asks you to
commit to 90 hours of volunteer service in the first year after you
are trained. This may include significant work educating the
public about mediation as well as actual mediation. Remember,
the more mediators trained, the more mediations must be
generated to keep them busy.
- Every mediation is a unique and important challenge.
- Mediation skills will enhance every relationship in your life for the
rest of your life.
Advanced trainings in areas such as Parenting Plan, Parent-teen and
Elder Mediation, IEP Facilitation, Intake training and Presentations are
available at no charge to trainees.
